One of the best kept secrets about Nii Otoo is that he is also a talented guitarist and composer of guitar songs in the famous Ghanaian palm wine and highlife styles. During his New Mexico visit, he will be completing a new CD of his guitar music entitled Ghana Sea Blues on the VoxLox Record Label. The Outpost concert will feature both his guitar music as well as his percussion-based Afro-Jazz.
Joining Nii Otoo will be Steven Feld, a UNM professor who has performed and recorded with him since 2005 in Ghana, Europe, and the US. Feld will be playing bass mbira, bass xylophone and bells. Also performing will be Austin-based flutist and saxophonist, Alex Coke, who is known for his long-time association with The Willem Breuker Kollektief and the late Tina Marsh's Creative Opportunity Orchestra. Rounding out the ensemble is the renowned and ubiquitous Albuquerque drummer, Jefferson Voorhees. This same ensemble performed during Ni Otoo's Duke University residency in 2009 and are featured with him on the 2008 CD, Topographies of the Dark.
