A free multimedia concert performance featuring the Ron McCurdy Quartet, created around Hughes’ kaleidoscopic jazz poem suite titled Ask Your Mama: Twelve Moods for Jazz. The poem deals with the struggle for artistic and social freedom for African American people at home and abroad and the show connects the historical dots between the Civil Rights Movement, the colonization of African countries and today’s landscape. The Langston Hughes Project features spoken word - a live reading of Ask Your Mama, along with music and imagery of people, places, artwork and events from the Harlem Renaissance period.
