French-Lebanese singer/pianist who’s being praised for his intense songs full of melancholy and keen social criticism, and for his exciting piano playing which combines Arabic, classical and contemporary music.

Bachar Mar-Khalifé is making name with his arresting album Ya Balad, on which he sings of his war-torn birthplace Beirut, for example in his variation on the classical Kyrie. Bachar is being praised for his colorful compositions. At the Bimhuis he will perform with his electric band, in which he plays with Arabic musicians and jazz musicians.

Bachar Mar-Khalifé graduated from the Conservatory of Paris. He has worked with conductors Lorin Maazel and James Gaffigan, as well as with Orchestre National de France and Ensemble Intercontemporain. Bachar is the son of the legendary Marcel Khalifé, virtuoso of the ud or Arabic lute....
