Ode to the innovative jazz of Gerry Mulligan en Chet Baker circa 1952-’53, with faithful ‘remakes’ as well as new variations and original compositions.
Gerry Mulligan brought the baritone sax into the spotlights, the instrument often limited to a supporting role in jazz orchestras. In the early 1950s he celebrated success with his pianoless quintet, a novelty in that day. The absence of a piano gave space for exciting harmony playing between Mulligan and trumpeter Chet Baker.
JanWillem van der Ham will pick up the baritone for his Mulligan-Baker Project, an Amsterdam group with a line-up similar to that of the Gerry Mulligan/Chet Baker Quartet. Original material from 1952-’53 will be approached in various ways: there will be authentic ‘remakes’ alongside contemporary versions (‘extensions’) and matching original compositions (‘counterparts’). The Mulligan-Baker Project has recorded its first album past summer....
