On Sunday, July 17, jazz vocalist Sue Matthews returns to the monthly concert series presented by Jazz Beyond Borders in the garden courtyard of Cafe Mezzanotte in Severna Park. For this special performance, the popular singer will be accompanied by two of the best in the business: pianist Robert Redd and bassist James King.

Enjoy classic hits from the 1930s such as “Love for Sale” by Cole Porter and “I Thought About You” with music by Jimmy Van Heusen and lyrics by Johnny Mercer. The program also includes popular 1940s pieces such as "Skylark" written by Hoagy Carmichael with lyrics by Johnny Mercer and “Do Nothing ‘Till You Hear from Me,” by Duke Ellington with lyrics by Bob Russell. Listeners are invited to come in period clothing if they so desire. Midway through the show, prizes will be awarded for the snazziest outfits worn by a female, male and couple.

Sue Matthews began performing while attending Washington College in Chestertown, Maryland where she met the late multi-instrumentalist and composer, John E. Starr, Jr. The two were members of the legendary Annapolis based eight-piece jazz fusion group Wooden Hands, followed by many other ensembles of all sizes. They traveled internationally with the show "Mozart to Motown," with Stef Scaggiari, Frank Russo and music director J. Ernest Green.

Matthews has continued to perform and collaborate work with an extensive list of top shelf artists in her storied career. A short list of artists not mentioned as yet includes guitarists Gene Bertoncini, Steve Abshire and Steve Herberman and bassists Keter Betts, Joe Byrd and Tommy Cecil as well as multi-instrumentalists Elizabeth Melvin, Randy Reinhart, Marlon Saunders, Scott Silbert and Marty Nau.
