Every spring, RJ Spangler's Planet D Nonet (PD9), Detroit's award-winning swing band, pays tribute to one of the pioneers and past masters of classic swing music with a two-hour concert. This year, PD9 will feature Fletcher Henderson, a college kid from Georgia who came to New York in the 1920s to find work as a chemist but who ended up as a piano player, composer, arranger, and bandleader. While it was his band that helped create the swing era sound, it was Benny Goodman's use of Henderson's big-band jazz arrangements that made swing the success it became.
