ThrowMEaway:
Kirsten Carey is a guitar, composer, and performer. She was raised in Chicago, IL and, after two years in Los Angeles, presently resides in Detroit, MI. Her primary projects include experimental rock duo Throwaway, solodoom project Shima, metal / avant-garde classical hybrid Motherfish, and the Ulysses Project - a suite based on James Joyce's novel that combines free jazz, rock, and theater. Carey's work plays with the boundary between music and other aspects performance, and constantly tampers with the idea of "genre." Carey was a resident artist at the 2018 Co-Incidence Festival in Boston, MA and has been a featured performer at the International Society of Improvised Music Conference.
Throwaway member Cory Tripathy is a Detroit-based drummer, improviser, and composer. Since graduating from the University of Michigan, he has performed with Michael Formanek, singer-songwriters Betsy Soukup and Jacob Sigman, as well as a myriad Detroit musicians across many different styles.
Peter Formanek is a saxophonist, flautist, clarinetist, electronicist, and (first and foremost) a musician and sonic explorer. Hailing from Baltimore, he recently graduated from the University of Michigan with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. Still, he's been studying music with a Ph.D.-level teacher his whole life, as Michael Formanek is his father. His frequent collaborations with pianist Josh Harlow walk the line between energetic improvisations and melodic explorations of touch and tone. His recent senior recital at Kerrytown Concert House drew a wide audience, but also proved he's a "musician's musician" with a rotating band featuring Tristan Cappel, Noah Henriksson, Tim Flood, Cory Tripathy, Christopher Tabaczynski, Ben Willis, Jon Taylor, and Kenji Lee.
