Tempest is an aggressive 9-piece big band nurturing the improvisational approach of a quintet. Duke Ellington, Mongo Santamaria, Count Basie…the big bands are well represented. But Tempest set lists are also dedicated to the small-group sounds of Miles Davis, Freddie Hubbard, John Coltrane and Art Blakey--all exquisitely arranged for Tempest's six horns and rhythm section. Friday night is strictly instrumental. Saturday features bop vocalist extraordinaire Audrey Shakir.
