About The Paulo Santos Quartet
Paulo Santos Bio:
Paulo Santos is a freelance saxophone/woodwind player born and raised in Austin. As
an active member of the Austin music scene, Paulo is a sought after and versatile horn
player, ranging from jazz small/large group music, high energy funk, indie projects, Top
40, and more.
Santos is a recent graduate of the University of Texas Butler School of Music, where he
studied Jazz Saxophone and Composition under Professors John Mills, John Fremgen,
and Jeff Hellmer. Since the age of 16, Paulo has had the opportunity to perform and
record locally and internationally with hard hitting Austin based bands large and small.
Some of these great bands include Big Wy’s Brass Band, Mamafesta (ACL 2019),
Flyjack, Boss Street Brass Band, Christian Wiggs Big Band, The Nightowls, Dayne
Reliford Experiment, Daniel Dufour-tet, and more. Recordings of Paulo’s playing include
EPs “Portal to Funkville” (2018) and “Lord Dope” (2019) with Big Wy’s Brass Band,
albums “Soul Catcher” (2020) and “Pan Am” (2021) with Flyjack, album “The Genesis”
(2019) by LA based Trumpet player David Young, Boss Street Brass Band’s latest
single “Verified” as well as countless horn samples and recordings for independent
artists.
Outside of the local band scene, Paulo’s versatility as a horn player have led to
appearances with world class acts on renowned stages, appearing on NPR Tiny Desk
with RnB/Rap group BLK ODDYSY, the ACL Stage with the viral Retro Soul outfit Thee
Sacred Souls, and the Louis Cole/Genevive Artadi Hyper-Funk/Pop band KNOWER. In
addition to these groups, Paulo’s jazz background has given him the opportunity to
perform with many well-renowned musicians from around the Austin area and the world,
such as Andre Hayward, Joe Lovano, Randy Brecker, Michael Dease, Chad
Lefkowitz-Brown, Michael Dease, Conrad Herwig, Francis “Rocco” Prestia and Ray
Greene of Tower of Power, and others.
The selections for the concert will consist of some of Paulo’s favorite jazz standards,
classic soul/rnb songs, and original compositions.
Milo Hehmsoth Bio:
Milo Hehmsoth is a pianist, composer, and educator based in Austin, Texas. With
inspiration from his father, renowned scholar and pianist Hank Hehmsoth, Milo draws
influence from Bill Evans, Brad Mehldau, Chick Corea, Thelonious Monk. Milo has
shared the stage with Austin mainstays Scott McIntosh, Andre Hayward, Autumn
Henderson, and more.
James Suter Bio:
James Suter is a bassist hailing from South Florida who recently received a Doctorate in
Music and Arts at The University of Texas at Austin. James started his education at The
University of Miami wherein he was a member of the prestigious Stamps Jazz Quintet.
Following his bachelor's degree, James then earned a Master's degree from North
Carolina Central University. He has shared the stage with Gary Burton, Chris Potter,
Dave Holland, Matt Wilson, Gilad Hekselman, Ellis Marsalis, Branford Marsalis, Jimmy
Heath, Andre Hayward, Joe Lovano, Steve Davis, Joey Calderazzo, Ira Sullivan, and
many others. James resides in Austin, Texas where he teaches and performs regularly.
James is on faculty as a bass instructor at Austin Community College.
Aaron Parks Bio:
Born and raised in Houston, TX, Aaron Parks moved to Austin in 2005 to attend
University of Texas at Austin for Mechanical Engineering. Always a passionate
drummer, he decided to take jazz combo classes and lessons from the jazz faculty. Ever
since, Aaron has been a freelance drummer on the Austin music scene. He has played
with groups/artists with a wide range of styles and influences. He can be seen playing
with Wilson Marks, Gil del Bosque, Paulo Santos, Dan Redner, Big Night, Tommy
Howard, Hushabyes, and many more. In 2018, he released his debut album, Space
Jazz. The 2020 sequel, Parks & Wreck, was recognized as one of The Austin
Chronicle’s top 100 albums of the year.
