Rudolph has performed with Don Cherry, Andre 3000, Jon Hassel, Pharaoh Sanders, Sam Rivers, Tyshawn Sorey, Muhal Richard Abrams, L. Shankar, Dave Liebman, Wadada Leo Smith, Philip Glass, Omar Sosa and Fred Anderson, among others. He toured extensively and recorded 15 albums with Yusef Lateef. \nAn early innovator of what is now called “World Music,” in 1978 he and Foday Musa Suso co-founded the Mandingo Griot Society, one of the first groups to combine African and American music. In 1988 he recorded the first fusion of American and Moroccan Gnawa music with sintir player Hassan Hakmoun. His music methodology and philosophy books, Pure Rhythm (2006) and Sonic Elements (2022), have been used by composers, performers, students and music institutions. \nAcclaimed composer and instrumentalist KAORU WATANABE’S work is grounded in traditional Japanese music while imbued with jazz, improvisation and experimental elements. His signature skill of merging the music, literature and aesthetic philosophies of Japan with disparate styles and mediums has made him a much-in-demand collaborator working with such iconic artists as André 3000, Yo-Yo Ma, Wes Anderson, Mikhail Baryshnikov, Laurie Anderson, Jason Moran, and Japanese National Living Treasure Bando Tamasaburo. A trained jazz musician, he became the first American to become a performer and artistic director of the ground-breaking Japanese taiko performing arts ensemble Kodo. In 2024, Watanabe launched Bloodlines Interwoven, a multifaceted commissioning project, festival, and ensemble celebrating heritage, immigration, and diaspora through music, cuisine, and storytelling. \nALEXIS MARCELO is an NYC-based pianist who was classically trained at the Harlem School of the Arts. As a Black Latino artist, Alexis was influenced by the vibrant musical landscape of New York in the 80s and 90s. He holds a bachelor’s degree in African-American Music/Jazz Piano from University of Massachusetts at Amherst where he studied composition and improvisation with Dr. Yusef Lateef. Alexis applies Dr. Lateef’s concepts of autophysiopsychic – a distinctive approach that emphasizes deep listening and creation of musical ideas rooted in harmony with one’s surroundings and oneself. \nAlexis has performed extensively across Europe and the U.S., collaborating with artists such as James Brandon Lewis at the Paris Philharmonic, Craig Harris and David Murray at Wesleyan University, and Yusef Lateef at the North Sea Jazz Festival. Alexis has also performed with the GZA of the Wu-Tang Clan, Abiodun Oyewole of the Last Poets, and Malcolm Mooney of CAN.
