Kenneth Thompkins was appointed Principal Trombone of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra by Neeme Järvi. Prior to this appointment, he held positions in the Buffalo Philharmonic and the Florida Orchestra and performed with the New World Symphony under the direction of Michael Tilson Thomas. A former participant in the Detroit Symphony’s African American Fellowship Program, he has been a mentor to several Orchestra Fellows over the years.
Thompkins has been invited to perform and conduct master classes at many music schools, including the Curtis Institute of Music, Mannes College, the University of Michigan, and Interlochen Arts Academy. An active chamber musician, hompkins performs frequently in recital and is a member of Detroit Chamber Winds & Strings. Thompkins has performed concertos with both the Detroit Symphony Orchestra and New World Symphony. Thompkins has toured Europe with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and has also performed with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, San Francisco Symphony, New York Philharmonic, and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. He can be heard on recordings by Detroit Chamber Winds, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. A native of Severna Park, Maryland Thompkins received his bachelor’s degree from Northwestern University and Master of Music degree from Temple University. Gregory Thompkins performs and resides in Baltimore, Maryland. He is an early jazz and commercial music graduate of Towson University, receiving his Bachelor of Science in 1989. Mr. Thompkins has studied music with Hank Levy, Glenn Cashman, Ron Diehl, George Garzone, Sara Nichols, and Denis Karp. In his 30-plus year music career, he has performed with All Mighty Senators, Lafayette Gilchrist, David Murray, George Garzone, Dave Ballou, Michael Formanek, and many others. He has recorded with Lafayette Gilchirst, All Mighty Senators, and his own groups.
As a saxophone teacher at Music and Arts, his students have performed in first chair positions in their local school bands. Several of his students have received music scholarships from Eastman School of Music, Towson University, University of Michigan, University of Maryland, and University of The Arts.
Mr. Thompkins is the Music Director of The Baltimore Jazz Education Project (BJEP), which has raised over $140,000 to provide underserved Baltimore area children with free instruments and music lessons. In eight years, the BJEP has worked with four local schools and helped hundreds of local students experience music. Mr. Thompkins was inducted into The Maryland Entertainment of Fame in 2017.
