ALAN BLACKMAN is a Baltimore-based pianist and award-winning composer. He and his various groups have performed at Blues Alley, the Kennedy Center, and many festivals and venues from San Francisco to New York. Recent performances have been with Donny McCaslin, Gilad Hekselman, Vardan Ovsepian, Ferenc Nemeth, Mike Pope, Tom Guarna, Joe Locke, Warren Wolf, Tim Green, Michael Formanek among others. He was awarded the eastern regional songwriting award by the Gospel Music Association and was selected to be part of the Betty Carter Jazz Ahead program at the Kennedy Center. Additionally, he has received grants from Chamber Music America New Jazz Works, Maryland State Arts Council in jazz composition and performance for the years 2007, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2013, 2014, 2015 and Baltimore Creative Fund grants for 2009 and 2010. Alan released his first CD of original music, Shadowdance, in January 2000 and is currently working on his first jazz composition book tentatively entitled, Changing Standards, which will be accompanied by an audio CD of his original arrangements. His next CD, Turning Point featuring Donny McCaslin was released in 2010 on Top Floor Records. A recording of his 2 Piano Improvised Series, Alone Together with various other pianists was released in 2011. The Coastal Suite was made into a CD with enhanced video content in 2015. His forthcoming 2017 release on Summit Records features guitarist Gilad Hekselman and is entitled Chapter 3.
Maryland Native STEVE BARKE has been exploring his passion for music and drumming for over 3 decades. A Graduate of the University of Miami's Frost School of Music, Steve has shared his passion thru countless live and studio performances, a private teaching business, and a U.S. Patent for a percussionist teaching aide. As a multi-instrumentalist, Steve frequently plays guitar and sings the “Great American Song Book” around the region with an emphasis on Assisted Living Facilities, and Rehabilitation Centers. Sharing the stage with Alan Blackman has been an ongoing adventure for Mr. Barke since the early 1990's while attending College at Miami. Tonight they are joined by fellow U of Miami Graduate and Baltimore native Leo Huppert.
Baltimore native LEO HUPPERT earned his B.M. in Studio Music and Jazz and M.M. in Jazz Bass Performance from the University of Miami Frost School of Music. After to moving New York in 1993, he has been active ever since on the NYC music scene, including stints with Blood, Sweat & Tears, Bobby Caldwell, a slew of big bands such as Bill Warfield, Ed Palermo’s Zappa big band, Anita Brown jazz Orchestra, as well as for Tony Award winner and TV’s “Younger” star Sutton Foster. He is also active on Broadway, currently serving as bassist for Jersey Boys. His studio work includes film and soundtrack work for HBO, ESPN, PBS and others.
