โ[Marcusโs album] Trio+ is crisp and tight and varied and has more good melodies than we can dip into, plus a lot of very good bass clarinet playing.โ

โTodd Marcus, one of the few bass clarinetists in modern jazz, has almost made a point of understating his skill as a player throughout his recording career. His first albums aimed to incorporate his ethnic heritage into his art, wedding Egyptian music theory with big-band jazz. On These Streets, his 2018 release, was an immersive, moving reflection of his work as an activist, organizer, and resident of West Baltimore. Marcusโ instrument was more his group than his horn on these records, as he used the ensembles to weave rich narratives through the arrangements. However, the bass clarinet is front and center on Trio+, a strong postbop showcase for Marcusโ unquestionable command of the instrument in a small-combo setting.โ

Bass clarinetist/composer Todd Marcus is one of the few jazz artists worldwide to focus their work primarily on the bass clarinet.
Marcusโ straight-ahead playing has carved out a unique voice for the instrument in modern jazz. His music swings hard with both a fiery and introspective intensity but also maintains a strong lyrical sensibility. and the New York Times writes, โMr. Marcus is probably the most inventive bass clarinetist working in straight-ahead jazz todayโฆ[and] lives in Baltimore, where he is a guiding light on the cityโs jazz scene who doubles as an activist and organizer.โ
The Washington Post writes, โListeners wonโt have any trouble recognizing Marcusโs compelling gifts for composing and arranging.โ JazzTimes magazine adds, โIn Marcusโ hands, the bass clarinet is no longer a specialty instrument. Its unique timbral richness becomes incisive, fully capable of forceful expression.โ
Self taught in jazz theory and composition, Marcusโ compositions draw largely on straight-ahead jazz and classical influences but over recent years have also increasingly explored the Middle-Eastern sounds from his Egyptian-American heritage. He has worked with other jazz artists such as Gary Bartz, Bennie Maupin, Don Byron, Larry Willis, Odean Pope, Gary Thomas, Joel Frahm, Tim Warfield, Ralph Peterson, Warren Wolf, Sean Jones, Xavier Davis, George Colligan, and Orrin Evans.
Marcus balances his music career by running Intersection of Change, a nonprofit addressing poverty related issues in his Baltimore neighborhood. The organization runs a community arts program for children & adults, a recovery program for women overcoming drug addiction, an urban farm, and has achieved significant community revitalization by renovating abandoned building and vacant lots.
