Two improvising composers come together for an evening of four-handed exploration. There will be nothing predetermined, no set list or charts to fall back on. Matt Lavelle was born in Paterson, New Jersey in 1970. He has been active in the New York City music community since 1990. Lavelle plays trumpet, flugelhorn, bass and alto clarinet and is a composer. He began his music career with Hildred Humphries, a swing era veteran saxophonist who played with Count Basie and Billie Holiday. He has played in ensembles led by Sabir Mateen since 2002. In 2005, Lavelle began studying with Ornette Coleman for 2 years. He was a member of the Bern Nix quartet from 2010 until 2017. He was instrumental in the return of Giuseppi Logan leading to a recording in 2010. In 2011 he created the 12 Houses Orchestra. As a leader Lavelle has recorded 15 albums, and has been on 40 recordings as a sideman. His solo alto clarinet album is the first one in jazz history. He has performed hundreds of times in New York, and toured Europe 5 times, headlining the Umea festival in Sweden in October 2011, as well as playing in Italy, Germany, Scotland, and Prague. ...

Lavelle is also a painter (26 new works during Covid 19) ,a writer, jazz scholar and history teacher. His thesis Ornette Coleman and Harmolodics has been downloaded more than 1500 times. Lavelle self-published his first book, New York City Subway Drama and Beyond, in 2011. In 2013 he published a short story The Jazz Musician's Tarot Deck. Steve Hirsh plays improvised music on the drumset. He's been leading improvising ensembles around Minnesota's Twin Cities for years, as well as performing in a variety of locales. His recent recordings include An Unlikely Place (with Zoh Amba and Luke Stewart), The Deep (with Joel Futterman, Chad Fowler and William Parker), Sparks (with Eri Yamamoto, William Parker and Chad Fowler), Ebb & Flow (with Joel Futterman and Chad Fowler), Warp & Weft (duo with Joel Futterman), Notice That There (with George Cartwright, Christopher Parker, Chad Fowler and Kelley Hurt), and Two Five None (with Chad Fowler). Hirsh has played and recorded with William Parker, Joel Futterman, Matthew Shipp, Ivo Perelman, Anthony Cox, Babatunde Lea, George Cartwright, Douglas Ewart, Luke Stewart, Chad Fowler, Eri Yamamoto, Zoh Amba, Steve Swell, Dave Sewelson, and Christopher Parker.
