David Johansen began his career as the singer of the protopunk band the New York Dolls in the early '70s. Johansen then embarked on a solo career, performing frequently with Sylvain Sylvain. Two solo albums, 'David Johansen' and' In Style' delivered some standout tracks. "Frenchette" and "Funky But Chic" became associated with the Dolls, although they first appeared on the solo albums.

Later, Johansen's pseudonym and alter ego, Buster Poindexter, appeared with Saturday Night Live's House Band, scoring the hit song "Hot Hot Hot". The song, he recalled in an NPR interview, was "the bane of my life," owing to its pervasive popularity! ...
