Throughout their 2017 performances, The Dave Liebman Group will feature music written and played by John Coltrane - celebrating the 90th year of his birth and 50th since his passing - covering the three periods of his short, yet extraordinary, career beginning with his tenure as a sideman in the Miles Davis Group; through the repertoire of the Classic Quartet (Tyner, Jones and Garrison); concluding with pieces from the late “free” jazz period. Coltrane's body of work represents a pinnacle of achievement in the 20th century exerting an influence that goes beyond jazz both spiritually and musically. For Liebman, seeing Coltrane live on many occasions in NYC inspired him to pursue this music.
