Crow has played a bewildering array of instruments during his career, and is best known as a bassist - also a trumpeter, saxophonist, trombonist, and drummer. Jazz historians align the start of his career in the '50s, when Crow transformed himself from a drummer in dance bands entertaining the posh folks to a jazz bassist. On bass, he gigged and recorded with Stan Getz, Gerry Mulligan, Al Haig and Marian McPartland.
Crow is noted, particularly, for his longtime partnership with saxophonist Gerry Mulligan in the 1950s and '60s, and the many recordings they made.

He is one of the few musicians who has written about his craft, beginning with a series of contributions to Jazz Review in the late '50s and eventually a full-length book. Entitled "Jazz Anecdotes" and published by Oxford University Press (1991), the book is like a transcription of every story ever told backstage.
