Jazz at Atlas is proud to present as part of its live music series the lifelong Hudson Valley resident and celebrated trumpeter, cornetist and composer Ted Daniel and his International Brass & Membrane Corps ensemble. This project brings a contemporary reading to the early New Orleans jazz of Joseph “King” Oliver and features leader Daniel on cornet, Marvin Sewell on guitar, Joseph Daley on tuba and Newman Taylor Baker on drums. IBMC is celebrating its debut recording, Zulu’s Ball - Ted Daniel Plays the Music of King Oliver, on Altura Records. Ted Daniel and IBMC will perform at Atlas Studios, located at 11 Spring St. in Newburgh, NY, on Saturday, July 21 at 8 PM. General admission will be $20 at the door -- no advance ticket sales will be available for this performance....

Ted Daniel has lived most of his life in Ossining, NY, growing up with the legendary guitarist, the late Sonny Sharrock, on whose classic 1969 album Black Woman Daniel made his recorded debut. This was followed a year later with his first date as a leader, the Ted Daniel Sextet album on Ujamaa Records. A leading figure in the NYC loft jazz in the 1970's, Daniel went on to record and perform with such other major artists as Sam Rivers, Archie Shepp, Dewey Redman, Andrew Cyrille, Billy Bang, Henry Threadgill, Defunkt while also leading groups of his own. His IBMC is a powerful quartet of equals with equally long histories in the music and demonstrates how even oldest forms of jazz can be approached with simultaneous respect and contemporary freshness.
