Maqueque (pronounced “Mah-Keh-Keh”), Jane Bunnett's exciting, energetic, all-female, Afro-Cuban ensemble, has seen each player grow into an accomplished composer and confident leader, as the music has grown more and more cohesive.

In less than five years - from a project to support and honor the new generation of young women jazz players and composers, this effort has grown to a Grammy-nominated, critically acclaimed band, in demand internationally at major Jazz festivals.

Led by veteran jazz icon, soprano saxophone player, flautist, composer and proud Canadian JANE BUNNETT - with five Juno awards, three Grammy nominations and an Officer of the Order of Canada civilian award - who has dedicated herself to taking MAQUEQUE to the world.

Highlights of ON FIRM GROUND / TIERRA FIRME include three new Jane Bunnett compositions, including "Monkey See, Monkey Do". Producer Larry Cramer contributes a stunning take on John Coltrane's "Moment's Notice," done in a conga style and clocking in just under three minutes.

In conjunction with the album's release, MAQUEQUE kicks off a 20-date run this summer and fall!Wherever Maqueque appears live the air is filled with an intoxicating spirit of joy. Their enthusiasm is contagious, thrilling audiences in clubs and festivals throughout North America. Maqueque’s fresh, inventive, no-compromise music earned the group a standing ovation at the Kennedy Center, a rare encore at the Chicago Jazz Festival, and four sold out nights at Chicago’s legendary Jazz Showcase.
