Teri will be singing songs from her new CD and from the albums, Lincoln recorded with Max Roach during the civil rights movement.

Mark is an improvising guitarist/composer who has performed with a who's who of jazz musicians internationally and has taught and performed at workshops for over 25 years. Mark continues to explore the world of improvised music and performs weekly in his 'hood and abroad. Mark is the Head of Jazz Studies at SUNY New Paltz.

Educator and jazz historian, Joe Washington, who has taught the Cultural History of Jazz at SUNY and CUNY, will speak about the meaning of Juneteenth - the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. From its Galveston, Texas origin in 1865, the observance of June 19th as the African American Emancipation Day has spread across the United States and beyond.
Today Juneteenth commemorates African American freedom and emphasizes education and achievement. It is a day, a week, and in some areas a month marked with celebrations, guest speakers, picnics and family gatherings. It is a time for reflection and rejoicing. It is a time for assessment, self-improvement and for planning the future. Its growing popularity signifies a level of maturity and dignity in America long overdue. In cities across the country, people of all races, nationalities and religions are joining hands to acknowledge a period in our history that shaped and continues to influence our society today. Sensitized to the conditions and experiences of others, only then can we make significant and lasting improvements in our society.
Tonight, Mr. Johnson will perform scenes from his show, "Frederick Douglas-In the Shadow of Slavery" and address the audience directly as Douglas from the point of view of an elder statesman. Mr. Johnson is touring the nation with his one-man show, written and directed by Tom Dugan.
Johnson, an accomplished actor and director in movies, television and on Broadway, is best known for his role as the mutant cab driver Benny in the 1990 science fiction film "Total Recall."
On Broadway, Mr. Johnson was recently featured in the musical revival of Jekyll & Hyde. He has starred in Hot Feet, featuring the music of Earth Wind and Fire, as Mufasa in The Lion King, in Bob Fosse’s Big Deal, The Rink with Liza Minnelli and Chita Rivera, Eubie! and On the 20th Century.
