Judi Silvano has been able to accomplish, what thus far, gives the appearance of multiple artists’ careers strung together. It’s all Judi, oftentimes dovetailing and overlapping her previous efforts.
An alchemist of music and movement, her career as a choreographer and dancer led her to NYC’s downtown music scene where her improvisational spirit could run free. It also steered her toward what would become a long-term collaboration with her husband, saxophonist Joe Lovano that continues to this day.
Throughout the ’80s, Judi could be found any given Monday night at the Village Vanguard where the Mel Lewis Jazz Orchestra held forth, soaking in the great charts of Thad Jones. Before long, Judi could sing along with the lead trumpet parts. You can trace the roots of her unique horn-like approach to vocalizing directly to this experience.
Silvano has 10 recordings to her credit, including 1997′s “Vocalise” on the Blue Note label and a landmark duo recording with Billie Holiday’s last accompanist, the great pianist Mal Waldron, “Riding A Zephyr”, released in 2002 on Soul Note Records. She’s led multiple vocal groups from Voices of Juniper to Voices Together, won numerous awards and grants (Meet the Composer and New York State Council on the Arts two times), been named one of the Top 10 Vocalists in Downbeat magazine 4 times and has contributed as a jazz journalist to All About Jazz & Jazz Improv Magazine for several years.

Teri Roiger is a jazz vocalist, pianist, composer and lyricist. The depth of her experience and love of jazz is apparent when she brings her talents to a live performance, the recording studio, in her compositions and when she shares her knowledge and inspiration with her students at SUNY New Paltz. Teri has recorded her third CD DEAR ABBEY: THE MUSIC OF ABBEY LINCOLN, a collection of songs written by Abbey Lincoln. Teri’s acclaimed composition STILL LIFE won third prize in the jazz category in the prestigious, world-renowned International Songwriting Competition.
Several years Teri and husband, pianist John Menegon, recorded, arranged, and produced their first CD with jazz legends Kenny Burrell and Jack DeJohnette entitled MISTERIOSO. The Monk family approved Teri’s lyrics for MISTERIOSO, now titled LISTEN TO YOUR SOUL.
In 2011 Teri with John Menegon, composed and scored the music for the documentary film BEYOND ICONIC about the renowned photographer Dennis Stock. Directed by Hanna Sawka, this film was premiered this fall at the prestigious Hot Springs Documentary Film Festival, Denver Film Festival, and also in New York City at the doc film festival. It was one of the top ten finalists at the Sao Paulo Film Festival.
Teri teaches Jazz Voice, the History of Jazz, and Vocal Jazz Ensembles with the SUNY New Paltz Jazz Program. She has also developed and presented four courses at Williams College (Williamstown, MA) on the music of Billy Strayhorn, Thelonious Monk, Brazilian Music, and Vocal Jazz Ensemble Performance.
Roiger has performed in the US, Canada, Mexico, and Europe. In January of 2012 Teri and John performed and taught at the 8th Annual Panama Jazz Festival in Panama City. In the summer of 2011, Teri and John created an ongoing jazz festival in Woodstock called JAZZSTOCK, bringing great jazz artists to the Hudson Valley. www.jazzstock.com
