Tim Ries's "The Rolling Stones Project"

During the Rolling Stones' NO SECURITY and FORTY WINKS tours, Stones' touring band member and respected jazz saxophonist, Tim Ries was forming jazz arrangements for Stones tunes, both popular and obscure. Reis presented Jagger, Richards, Watts and Wood with a demo, asking for their blessing on the project. "I thought what Tim recorded was amazing, and I'm sort of jealous of him. When we wrote those songs, there was a lot of pressure on us to keep them as short as possible for the singles market. With what Tim does, he has the luxury to stretch out the melodies and play with the different chords and harmonies. Instead of the sketches that we basically recorded, Tim's versions are more like fully finished things. The playing is beautiful too. Tim always has such a beautiful sound." Keith Richards/Interview with Downbeat Magazine Reis asked The Stones' Charlie Watts, a jazz recording artist in his own right, for his participation. To Ries's amazement, Keith Richards, Ron Wood and Sheryl Crow showed up at the studio, as well! "The Rolling Stones Project" was released in 2005 and, subsequently, "Stones World Music Project" followed in 2008 with an extraordinary line up of personnel. Contributing recording artists included leading jazz and rock celebrities: Charlie Watts, Keith Richards, Ron Wood, Norah Jones, Sheryl Crow, Bill Frisell, John Scofield,Ben Monder, Darryl Jones, John Patitucci, Jeff Ballard, Brian Blade, Clarence Penn, Michael Davis, Lisa Fischer, Bernard Fowler, Luciana Souza, Bill Charlap, and others.
