Celebrity Series of Boston is one of the nation’s most highly regarded multi-disciplinary performing arts presenters. With a reputation for artistic excellence honed over eight+ decades since our founding in 1938, Celebrity Series now presents over 65 main stage performances each season in eight to ten different venues across Boston and Cambridge, plus over 150 community engagement activities annually. Celebrity Series is a critical part of the cultural fabric of our region, not only bringing great artists to Boston whom our audiences might not otherwise experience but also introducing our audiences to new artists, new art forms, and new artistic experiences. Today, Celebrity Series’ audiences experience the world’s great orchestras, chamber ensembles, and soloists, and leading artists in contemporary dance, jazz, world and folk music, and spoken word. Our 2019-20 season from October through March included jazz, chamber, and solo music from artists such as Sergio Mendes & Bebel Gilberto, Sheku Kanneh-Mason, Cécile McLorin Salvant, and the Wynton Marsalis Quintet; orchestral performances by Gewandhausorchester Leipzig and the Los Angeles Philharmonic with Gustavo Dudamel and Yuja Wang; and innovative contemporary dance from companies such as Black Grace, Caleb Teicher, Camille Brown & Dancers, and others. On March 12, 2020 we made the difficult decision to cancel all remaining performances for the season due to COVID-19. This included 21 engagements, with artists such as Chris Thile, The Chieftains, Kronos Quartet, Renee Fleming, Paul Taylor Dance Company, and Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, to name but a few. Alongside mainstage performances, Celebrity Series’ Arts for All! community engagement programs reach thousands of participants annually via Neighborhood Arts (hands-on, interactive workshops for youth and free and deeply discounted community concerts in six Boston neighborhoods); Artist Connections (master classes with mainstage artists in public schools and conservatories); Take Your Seat (free and discounted tickets to mainstage performances); and large-scale, participatory Public Performance Projects, such as Street Pianos, Let’s Dance Boston, and Concert for One. All remaining Arts for All! events for 2019-20 have also been canceled. The safety of Celebrity Series of Boston audience members, artists, staff, and those in our community is our highest priority. As cancellations of performances and gatherings become more widespread in response to COVID-19, the financial impact on artists and presenters around the world is becoming a harsh reality. We are already hard at work on plans to continue to serve our community during these uncertain times, even if we cannot gather people together for live performances. We thank you and welcome your support. We will get through this, together.
