A very special evening of creative-improvised music! Dave Burrell, one of the historical masters of improvisation, hasn't appeared in Boston in many years and is coming to perform and video record this evening in a dialogue with Ed Hazell for Fewell's upcoming book, Outside Music, Inside Voices: Dialogues on Improvisation, Spirituality and Creative Music

Pianist Dave Burrell is one of the worlds most renowned creative composer-improvisers, performing since the mid '60's on 115 recordings, 30 as a leader. In 1965 he received a degree in composition from Berklee College of Music and recorded Tauhid with saxophonist Pharoah Sanders, Juba-Lee with Marion Brown and Three for Shepp with Archie Shepp. In 1968 Burrell co founded the group “360 Degree Experience” with trombonist Grachan Moncur and drummer Beaver Harris and in 1969 recorded Live the Pan-African Festival with Archie Shepp in Algiers for the French BYG label. His playing combines the entire history of jazz from Dixieland to free, though it is as an inside/outside player that he most excels. He has also recorded with David Murray, Alan Silva, William Parker, Andrew Cyrille and Sunny Murray. Burrell is currently composer-in-residence at the Rosenbach Museum and Library in Philadelphia and was commissioned to write several important works of music, Western Extension of the United States and a series of concerts to commemorate the Sesquicentennial of the Civil War (1861-1865). Guitarist Garrison Fewell has performed and recorded with John Tchicai, Cecil McBee, Steve Swell, Roy Campbell Jr., Fred Hersch and George Cables. He has released 15 recordings for Soul Note, Koch Jazz, Splasc(H), Boxholder, Accurate, No Business, Nu Bop and CNM Records, beginning with the 1993 Boston Music Award-winning A Blue Deeper Than the Blue (Accurate), and has multiple titles ranked on Best of the Year lists in publications such as Coda, Guitar Player, Musica Jazz, The Wire, AllAboutJazz, Montreal Gazette and his hometown Philadelphia Inquirer. Fewell is featured on a new LP Tribal Ghostrecorded live at Birdland with John Tchicai, Charlie Kohlhase, Cecil McBee and Billy Hart. He is the author of four books on improvisation and recipient of grants for performance and composition from the NEA, Artslink, Pew Charitable Trust, Meet the Composer, USIA—American Cultural Specialist, and Berklee Faculty Fellowship Awards.
