It is also the name of a new quartet whose jazz lineage is thoughtfully apparent in the music they make. They are a happy band of friends, which will be evident when you see them in person. Their sense of wonder and delight in each other’s inventiveness creates an infectious enthusiasm.

Max Ridley – upright bassist makes the music dance while playfully breaking open the grid of time to liberate the proceedings.

Dor Herskovits – Israeli-born drummer whose deep feel and intelligent phrasing drive and shape the music holds the key to its ebullience.

Taking swing and groove and melody and song form as their basic elements, Tetraptych combines them in an exuberant way; their point of departure. This is not dry or cerebral music. And though there are solos – and many of Hery’s are epic – one encounters the tetraptych: the input of each member during these solos, a dawning realization that the entire group is soloing simultaneously.

A notable feature of these paintings is that each panel – though it can stand on its own – speaks to the other panels, working together, spreading the focal point, softening the boundaries.

The band’s sound arises in the same way; its nature is collective. One hears an adventurous conversation among the four instruments, each individual listening and contributing. One senses their unique personalities and warmth as they each navigate their tasks and changing roles in the unfolding drama. This is the embodiment of interconnection through sound.
