This rare appearance of Maestro Greene, one of the Godfatherâs of Free Jazz piano and an ageless stalwart of the growth and expansion of Jazz into the contemporary and alternative worlds, will also mark the release of two albums on the French Improvising Beings label: * Compedium (solos, duos & Trios) by Burton Greene, Zither Gods by Eric Zibman. The first set will be a solo performance by Boston pianist Eric Zinman
Pianist Burton Greene was born June 14, 1937 in Chicago. Following a brief stay in San Francisco he moved to New York in the early â60s and quickly became part of the nascent free jazz movement, forming probably the first spontaneous composition group with bassist Alan Silva in '63: The Free Form Improvisation Ensemble. He joined Bill Dixon's and Cecil Taylor's Jazz Composers Guild in 1964 and worked with Marion Brown, Rashied Ali, Albert Ayler, Sam Rivers, and Patty Waters among others before moving to Europe in 1969. He currently resides in Amsterdam, the city where he has lived since 1970. Burton has recorded for no less than fifteen labels, including ESP-Diskâ, Columbia, Button Nose, Cat Jazz, CIMP, BVHaast, and Drimala Records.
During the late 1980s he began exploring the Klezmer tradition in his groups Klezmokum (along with Perry Robinson), Klez-thetics, and a more recent group called Klez-Edge with vocalist Marek Balata. As an eclectic composer and performer, his works are also involved with contemporary classics (he had seven years of classical music training), electronics, and a great variety of folklore musicâs.
Since the mid-1990s Greene has often performed and recorded in New York and along the East Coast. His autobiography written over 20 years, Memoirs of a Musical Pesty-Mystic, was published in 2001 (Cadence Jazz Books
Born 1963 and educated in Boston, MA USA, Eric Zinman met musician/composer Bill Dixon in 1981, becoming a turning point in his musical life. Mr. Zinman also speaks highly of his studies with musician/pianist/composer Naqi Qamar. He continued his studies of modern music at the New England Conservatory of Music with Ran Blake, Jimmy Giuffre, and George Russell where he received an MM degree in 1985.
At the forefront of creative music for more than 20 years, Eric Zinmanâs piano playing is known internationally and has been described as a âfleet and appealing touchâ. Rooted in the language of the avant garde, his vision embraces the role of the piano in the orchestras of the future.
Mr. Zinman has also composed music for dance and theatre using verbal directives as well as graphic scores and with painters and poets. He has written about music and musicians and is recorded on Ayler, and Cadence Records. In 2005 Eric Zinman founded New Language Collaborative with cellist Glynis Loman and percussionist Syd Smart. Not excluding his work with percussionist Laurence Cook, New Language Collaborative has become the life blood of Mr. Zinmanâs work in the US.

Drummer, composer, artist, poet, dancer, visionary, nature mystic, Ra-Kalam Bob Mosesâs (born January 28, 1948 in New York City) life has been a continuous quest for vision, spirit, compassion, growth, and mastery in a multiplicity of art forms. Moses currently performs alongside numerous musicians and teaches at New England Conservatory.
Damon Smith: www.balancepointacoustics.com. After many years in the San Francisco Bay Area, and six great years in Houston, Texas Damon moved to the Boston area in the fall of 2016. Damon studied double bass with Lisle Ellis and has had lessons with Bertram Turezky, JoĂŤlle LeandrĂŠ, John Lindberg, Mark Dresser, all a whoâs who in (Avant, New Music) double bass Jazz! Damonâs explorations into the sonic palette of the double bass have resulted in a personal, flexible improvisational language based in the American jazz avant-garde movement and European non-idiomatic free improvisation. Visual art, film and dance heavily influence his music.
Damon has collaborated with a wide range of musicians, including: Cecil Taylor, Marshall Allen (of Sun Raâs Arkestra), Henry Kaiser, Roscoe Mitchell, Michael Pisaro, Wadada Leo Smith, Marco Eneidi, Wolfgang Fuchs, Peter BrĂśtzmann and Peter Kowald. Again, a whoâs in Post-Modern Jazz.
The Creative Music Series (CMS) was established in January, 2015, to showcase the work of adventurous jazz musicians from Out-of-State, presenting them in intimate venues in the Cambridge/Somerville area. My endeavor was a reaction to the apparent lack of invitations being extended to accomplished and even unknown musicians to Boston. CMS has now begun to also zero in on Boston based musicians who are creating their own projects with these out-of-town guests and taking these musical risks to find an expression and gain a wider appreciation.
