One of the group's hallmarks is programming that bridges tradition and innovation — for example, pairing works by Beethoven and Brahms with contemporary voices that challenge and expand the piano trio form. In partnership with Chamber Music America and the Barlow Foundation, Calyx has commissioned and premiered numerous new works written especially for them by such composers as James Lee III, Derek Bermel, Lansing McLoskey, Amy Beth Kirsten, and Florent Ghys, including the recent world premiere of Ghys’s multimedia work Huit Clos in St. Louis. Their performances invite listeners of all backgrounds into a musical dialogue that is welcoming and accessible while offering performances of uncompromising musicianship, virtuosity, and style.
