Marco Pignataro at Regattabar

“Italia in Jazz” is a jazz tribute to timeless Italian standards and original music directed by saxophonist Marco Pignataro. Pignataro brings together an All Star Italian band with European jazz bass legend Riccardo del and pianist extraordinaire Teo Ciavarella from Bologna, Italy; plus Matt Marvuglio on flute and drummer Marcello Pellitteri. Many special guests, including the legendary saxophonist George Garzone as well as Somer O’Brien on accordion and the Berklee String Ensemble, will join the group.

Marco Pignataro, from Bologna, Italy, is a multi-talented saxophone player, composer and educator. Pignataro has shared the stage with jazz artists such as Eddie Gomez, Danilo Perez, Jon Faddis, JoAnne Brakeen, Billy Hart, John Patitucci and George Garzone. Pignataro is a member of the Eddie Gomez Quintet as well as leader of the Marco Pignataro Jazzet. He maintains a very active performance and educational schedule of concerts, recordings and clinics internationally and domestically. Pignataro's latest CD release, “Sofia’s Heart”, was produced by Eddie Gomez and features Marco’s compositions and arrangements. Riccardo Del Fra was born in 1965 in Rome and has been a Paris resident since the 1980’s. He is a multi-talented double bass player, arranger, and composer and he has shared the stage with Barney Wilen, Dave Liebman, Johnny Griffin and Kenny Wheeler. Along with the aforementioned legends, del Fra played alongside Chet Baker for nine years. This collaboration led to twelve (12) albums, videos and the movie Chet’s Romance directed by Bertrand Fèvre. In the 1990s, trombonist and composer Bob Brookmeyer invited him to join his quartet. They toured together and recorded the album “Paris Suite”, which went on to win the Prix de l’Academie du Jazz in 1994. In September 2004 Riccardo Del Fra was named head of the department of Jazz and Improvised Music at the Conservatoire National Superieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris. In 2003, Riccardo del Fra was named Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the Minister of Culture and Communication, one of the highest honors one can receive in France.
