About
I'm very excited to have the Matt Glaser Trio back at the Mandorla Music Series! They played a show in Mandorla's earlier iteration, Jazz at The Green Room, in the fall of 2014, and blew away a packed room with their musicianship, humor, and warmth.
Matt Glaser chaired the strings department at Berklee for over twenty years, and now heads Berklee's American Roots Music Program. His life long exploration of jazz, bluegrass, and the rich terrain in between has afforded him the opportunity to play with such varied artists as Stephane Grappelli, Yo Yo Ma, Bob Dylan, Ralph Stanley, David Grisman, Andy Statman, Lee Konitz... you get the idea! He also served as an advisor and onscreen commentator for Ken Burns' PBS Jazz documentary series, and contributed to the soundtrack for Burns' Civil War series. Matt's recent instructional book, Fiddle Tunes on Jazz Changes, teaches students to "develop jazz solos using melodic fragments from traditional fiddle tunes." Matt has said, "When I'm playing jazz there is always an element of bluegrass mixed in. And when I'm playing bluegrass, there is always an element of jazz." This trio draws more explicitly from jazz and swing sources, but don't be surprised if you hear some other elements over the course of the evening....
