About

“When I started to play from Bartók’s For Children, somehow I was unable to get familiar with those little pieces and I always had the feel of missing something as they were opening into the sound of music. I might have been missing the classical style models or else unfolding the themes further on. Later, when I already had them in my curriculum, we often improvised on some of those ostinati or harmony sequences.

These 15 little pieces constitute a designed selection from the 4-volume-work. While selecting I was trying to present moods or characters. In the course of this work I was about to get together all those techniques of composition and principles for stucture or arrangement having showed up as essential in these miniatures. I opened up the strictly designed structural framework of every piece. Likewise every one of them was augmented with an improvised period which appear as intros or outros for relaxation. There are traditional theme - improvisation - theme structures but I sometimes reharmonised the original piece into a major key and after improvising on the new sequence I returned into the original minor key which is also followed by improvisation. That is a new composition was born out of the two themes of the original piece and the improvisations on two different harmony changes. The encounter of ornamentation and scalar systems of the beautiful folk ballads and those in African-American folk music and blues were also exciting and inspiring in the creative process. I’d like to thank my friends, Ákos Benkó and Tibor Fonay, for their creative contribution and the excellent building of rhythmic backgrounds and grooves.” (excerpts from Károly Binder's sleeve notes)...
