Montreux, 2010. At the world’s most important competition for jazz piano, David Helbock won the audience award, and the second prize of the professional journey. When he and two more similarly talented musicians, Johannes Bär and Andreas Broger started to record an album in Berlin, they relied on the simplest of formulae: three musicians, three dozen instruments and a few favourite songs.
Recorded in the course of two dense days the studio will never forget, Random/Control is a magical, refined album without a sense of haste. Helbock surrounded himself with all manner of keyed and percussive instruments, and Johannes Bär with all known kinds of trumpets, tubas and horns, though he also played the didgeridoo, and started beatboxing when the whim took him. Andreas Broger, in his turn, blew everything that had the slightest resemblance to a saxophone or clarinet....
