The Ektar Instrumental Quintet has been playing somewhere at the intersection of world music, chamber music and improvisational jazz for nineteen years. Szabolcs Szőke's compositions are inspired by a wide range of influences - Balkan, Middle Eastern and Far Eastern cultures, Africa, India, European folk music, but Ektar's music also draws on early and contemporary music and jazz.

The name Ek-tar refers to the "swinging on a single string", which is the Indian word for "one-string".
