j(A)zz! - David Helbock – Lorenz Raab Duo (A) at Opus Jazz Club

Brilliant Austrian pianist David Helbock, a regular guest of the Opus, enters the stage this time in duo. Just like him, his partner, multiple Hans Koller prize winner Lorenz Raab, principal trumpeter at the Vienna Volksoper, is an incredible virtuoso and artist of his instrument. It’s very fortunate that the two exceptional musicians formed a duo, as both of the nearly 30-year Vorarlbergers are brilliant composers, though in quite different way. Helbock wrote his Real-book with 365 compositions in a year, with a soft spot for Prince he in a wonderful cover of Sometimes It Snows in April. In addition, Lorenz Raab’s compositions approaching to Henry Purcell (Dido and Aeneaes) and Franz Schubert (Kupelwieser Waltz) reflect on classical music. Complex, but very catchy melodies alternate with experiments on sound, unplugged, without any technical assistance. Once we hear ocean waves on the trumpet, while in the next moment it turns to the traditional sounds of a wonderful ballad....
