Garrett’s mesmerizing and powerful solos already rank among the most memorable and enduring moments in jazz history.

Garrett first emerged on the national scene in 1978 as a unique voice with an undeniable gift for emotive melody, which led to collaborations with Woody Shaw, Freddie Hubbard, Art Blakey, and Miles Davis. On his album Sounds from the Ancestors, Garrett evokes the spirit of ancestral African voices—songs from church services, spoken prayers, field chants, Yoruba melodies, and African drumming—while also paying tribute to Roy Hargrove and two groundbreaking drummers, Art Blakey and Tony Allen. These artists all looked to the past to shape the future sound and evolution of jazz.
