79 years old this year, composer, saxophone and clarinet player Michel Portal is a living legend of French jazz. He has also worked with such greats of contemporary music as Pierre Boulez and Karlheinz Stockhausen. He was a key figure of the new wave of French free jazz that emerged in the late 1960s. His partner in Budapest is an amazing accordion player, Vincent Peirani, who is almost forty years his junior.
A winner of the most prestigious accordion competitions in the 1990s in Germany, Switzerland, Italy and France, Peirani also plays the clarinet. Following some classical training, he became interested in jazz at the age of sixteen, in 1996, and five years later enrolled at the jazz course of the Paris Conservatoire. Initially he himself had doubts about the move, considering his classical prehistory and the instrument a drawback. Luckily, he did not have to wait long for the breakthrough: in 2003 he won the La Défense jazz competition — and he won hands down. Following this success, he became a welcome partner for the cream of French jazz, and his cooperation with some of the artists, including Michel Portal, has remained fruitful ever since....
