The Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra has never been to Müpa Budapest, so the introduction of one of Asia’s most significant ensembles, one that can look back on a history of over a century, promises to be an enthralling experience. They have crafted their 20th century programme with a great deal of care and attention. The main protagonists for the evening are Shakespeare’s immortal lovers and the music of America. The performance will be bookended by excerpts from the Symphonic Dances from Bernstein’s West Side Story and the ballet suites from Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet, with Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue in between, for which the Japanese Makoto Ozone, a jazz pianist of international prestige, will be gracing the keyboard. The concert’s world-famous conductor will be the Korean Myung-whun Chung, who has appeared on several occasions at the Béla Bartók National Concert Hall, always to great acclaim....
