About
Born 1950 in Zgorzelec as a son of Greek political refugees, Polish singer and composer Jorgos Skolias was raised in a multinational and culturally diversified community. He took part in Greek minority events, but soon was getting interested beside Greek music also in rock and blues. In 1970s he started to participate in the rock and blues environment active in Wrocław at that time, represented by bands like Nurt, Grupa 111 or Spisek Sześciu.
His professional career began in 1982 in a jazz rock group Krzak, letting him join to a circle of searching and innovative artists. For over one year Skolias belonged to Osjan group, and from 1988 to 1991 he was a vocalist at Young Power, one of the key bands of Polish new jazz of late 1980s. Since then Jorgos Skolias has never stopped searching for an individual formula for the application of human voice in music. He reaches for inspiration to blues, jazz, rock or ethnic music of Greece, Africa and India. He has studied ancient vocal techniques and as one of just a few jazz vocalists, he has mastered overtone singing (parallel emission of three different pitches). Throughout the years he has also been active in the field of theatre and film music....
