About
Double bass player Barre Phillips hails from San Francisco, though he has lived in Europe since 1967 (and in the South of France since 1972). A key figure of jazz and free improvisation, he will be eighty on 27 October, shortly after his Budapest concert. His duo concert with György Kurtág Jr promises to be a delicate adventure in music.
Among other things, Barre Phillips attracted attention in the 1960s with solo double bass concerts, and went on to publish the first record that included only double bass improvisations. In the 1970s he played with saxophonist John Surman and drummer Stu Martin; The Trio was a leading avant-garde formation of the era. In the same decade, Barre Phillips made a number of sensational appearances in Hungary, both with his own trio and with the quintet of Attila Zoller. A player who can produce astonishing sounds, he often collaborates with dancers, and is a keen participant in performance art....
