Openness to the world, without forgetting where you came from, cosmopolitanism with strong regional roots: Wolfgang Puschnig embodies the essential, though often overused slogan of bipolarity in an exemplary manner, being a model case for European jazz since the beginning of the 80s. Carinthia, Austria's southernmost province located at the intersection of Germanic, Slavic and Romanic culture and language, was the home ground which shaped Puschnig’s thinking and feeling as musician. His elegiac intonation and melodic lines, that are so characteristic to his personal style, touch deeply both non-professionals and connoisseurs, demonstrating that even in the age of almost irritatingly confusing postmodern diversity it is possible to develop an almost romantic and from the first sound identifiable musical idiom....
