Dutch pianist and composer Michiel Borstlap, born 1966 in The Hague into a family that loved and constantly listened to music, started playing piano at the age of 5 years. In 1992 he finished his piano studies at the Hilversum Conservatory with highest honors and won the first prize at the Europe Competition in Brussels. His first performances as a leader were in 1992 with his own sextet on the album Day Off.

In 1996 he won the prestigious Thelonious Monk Composition Competition with Memory of Enchantment, a composition which was later recorded by Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter. This was followed by a range of successful collaborations with other jazz and pop legends like Bill Bruford, Gino Vannelli, Pat Metheny, and more recently with Ludovico Einaudi.

Borstlap has released more than twenty albums under his own name and has written numerous compositions for other groups as well. “To compose or to improvise is the same, except for the timeframe. Improvising happens in split seconds, composing lasts much longer” he once said. In 2008 he composed his first soundtrack for the Dutch movie Tiramisu, the score received a Golden Calf, the Grand Prize of Dutch Film Industry.

In 2010 Michiel started working on a solo piano career as well. In 2014 the Dutch ballet group Scapino Ballet has a project with the music of his latest solo album Reflective.

Since his 1994 debut at the North Sea Jazz Festival the esteemed pianist played concerts and performed at festivals in more than 70 countries of the world, both with his bands as well as a soloist. In September 2005 he played an unforgettable concert with Tony Lakatos and Elemér Balázs at the MOL Budapest Jazz Festival, organized by BMC.
