Said Tichiti from Morocco introduced the first time Gnawa music in Hungary with his group Chalaban. Gnawa, at its birthplace Morocco, is a part of culture among the descendants of slaves, joining to trance-rituals of healing. William Burroughs called this ancient, sacral trance-music form “the world’s earliest, 4000-years old rock’n’roll”. Gnawa is based upon magic rhythm patterns, being unaltered and continuously changing at the same time. Though the basic rhythm is constant, its steadily varying accents add always new pulsation to the music, accelerating and cumulating during the improvisations. Thanks to this unique and rich rhythmics, Gnawa influenced several significant rock and jazz musicians worldwide (The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, Santana, Ornette Coleman, Pharoah Sanders, or Archie Shepp). ...
