Internationally recognized composer Alan Chan will conduct the debut concert of Alan Chan Jazz Orchestra, a 17-member big band comprised of some of the best Jazz musicians in Los Angeles, on Monday, July 30 at 8:00 and 9:30 p.m. at Typhoon at Santa Monica Airport, in a show of Dr. Chan’s innovative and genre-bending compositions.

Alan Chan was the winner of the 2011 ArtEZ Jazz Composition Contest at the International Jazz Festival in Enschede (ijfe.nl), Netherlands for his composition To Be Continued (aka Tzu Zu Ku). Dr. Chan is also a recipient of honors from ASCAP, Percussive Arts Society and Los Angeles County Arts Commission, among others. This concert features Alan’s big band compositions written since 2005, plus world premieres of new works. Alan’s music often took inspiration from his life experiences while as a resident in various parts of the world. Contemporary poetry, current events such as environmental protection, and subjects related to his cultural heritage also play a major role.

An alumnus of the BMI Jazz Composers Workshop in New York City and the University of Southern California, his big band works have been performed by Chuck Owen and the Jazz Surge, Millennium Jazz Orchestra (Netherlands), Gateway Jazz Orchestra (Los Angeles) and by college big bands in Miami, Redlands and Los Angeles.
