January 23 - March 8, 2013 there's an exhibit of over sixty historical images (shot on film) of some of LA's elite musicians, as well as internationally famous jazz names, at the spectacular new Valley Performing Arts Center Galley on the campus of California State University, Northridge. Some notable subjects include the first Playboy Jazz Festival at the Hollywood Bowl in 1979, Joe Williams, Peggy Lee, the great Jack Sheldon, Chet Baker, Louie Bellson, CSUN's own Jazz Co-Chair Prof. Gary Pratt, and more.
Photographer, Jon Deshler started taking pictures in the early 1970's and in a few years was hooked on listening to, and shooting, generally in performance, some of the greatest musicians in the world. Those that worked in the studios during the day, recording scores for TV, movies, commercials, and more, would come out at night to play at clubs like Donte's and Carmelo's in the heart of the Valley.
Having grown up in North Hollywood in the '60s and 70's Mr. Deshler, later attended CSUN for two years prior to transferring to the Pasadena, Arts Center College of Design. Mr. Deshler has been published worldwide for clients large and small including: AFLAC, Intel, LA Stage, Nike, Nokia, People’s Bank, Pioneer, Sony, The Oregon Symphony, Willamette Industries, and Xerox.
Deshler, after a thirty-year career in commercial art, has retraced his roots to archive, access, and share this historical record. Scanning over two thousand mostly 35mm negatives this exhibit provides a glimpse into the end of an era prior to the digital revolution from the perspective of a teenage jazz photographer.
The artist reception is February 28th, 5-7, followed at 7:30 pm by the CSUN “A” Band concert, under the direction of Prof. John Daversa, in the VPAC Hall.
The gallery is open prior to performances in the VPAC hall and by appointment.
