Goldberg, who performs on all manner of clarinets, is a veteran of a variety of musical genres, from the experimental world of The San Francisco Bay area, to the New Klezmer and Downtown jazz scene of New York City. He is a restless composer and bandleader, having recorded CD’s in a wide range of styles, from acoustic trio covers of Thelonious Monk tunes, to large ensembles featuring electric guitarist Nels Cline. It was in the bay area that Goldberg came together with pianist/keyboardist Michael Coleman and drummer Hamir Atwal, to form Invisible Guy, which will release its debut recording in January. Although at first glance the group appears to be a traditional jazz trio, their music gradually reveals novel and unconventional ideas. Their music ranges from quiet and subtle to intense and raucous. Coleman alternates between acoustic piano and electric keyboard, from which he can draw unusual electronic sounds and textures. Drummer Atwal also is versatile enough to provide subtle atmospheric touches or strong backbeat -- whichever the music calls for. In all cases, as Coleman says, “melody is the knife that cuts through to truth.”
