Over her long musical career, Holly Hofmann has helped make the flute a front-line instrument in jazz, earning the praise and respect of musicians and jazz aficionados for her bluesy, bebop-based improvisations. Over her long musical career, Holly Hofmann has helped make the flute a front-line instrument in jazz, earning the praise and respect of musicians and jazz aficionados for her bluesy, bebop-based improvisations. The highly respected pianist and arranger Mike Wofford has garnered national attention for his work with Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Zoot Sims, Benny Carter and many other jazz greats.
Hofmann and Wofford began touring and recording together in 2001 both as a duo and in a quartet setting. Their recent recordings include 2013’s Turn Signal, featuring Wofford’s brilliant arrangements for a flute and trumpet front line. Hofmann’s 2015 release on Capri Records is Low Life: The Alto Flute Project, which shows Hofmann in a whole new light.
Hofmann says “Jazz is an emotional music and I feel its rhythms in my heart and soul. …I want to make a serious contribution to changing the perception of the flute as it’s seen in jazz. And I’d like to provide encouragement to women in what is still a male-dominated field.”
