Monika Herzig at Unity Of Charlottesville

On Friday September 23rd at 8:00 pm, The Charlottesville Jazz Society and WTJU welcome back the vibrant pianist Monika Herzig and her stellar all-female ensemble, “The Whole World In Her Hands,” celebrating the release of their debut CD. Their concert last year at The University of Virginia was very enthusiastically received, so this fall they will play in a larger room-- Unity Church’s beautiful chapel on Hydraulic Road. This concert will kick off WTJU’s Jazz Marathon fundraiser, which begins September 26th and features a solid week of jazz and blues.

In addition to being a highly skilled pianist, composer and arranger, Monika Herzig is one of the world’s foremost proponents of jazz education. Her vivacious personality immediately draws in both students and jazz fans of all ages. These attributes were on display when she came through town recently to perform for the Charlottesville Jazz Society’s Artist Educator Series at Tin Whistle, hooking up with some of our finest local female jazz stars, Gina Sobel and Dhara Goradia....

The Whole World in Her Hands is an all-star collection of some of the top female jazz artists from around the globe. It’s a thrilling band that plays a wide range of material, jumping between swing, blues, modern jazz and gospel, including original tunes by the band members, along with some jazz classics. For this stop on their tour, the band will consist of veteran flute player Jamie Baum, the electrifying Israeli-born trombonist Reut Regev, bassist Jennifer Vincent who recently toured the world with the Duke Ellington Orchestra, and Nashville-based drummer Arianna Fanning.
