The Charlottesville Jazz Society and WTJU are thrilled to announce the return of saxophonist Jane Bunnett and her all female band from Cuba, Maqueque. This will be the bands 3rd concert in Charlottesville, and they are one of the most requested groups that the CJS has sponsored here. The concert will be held Sunday February 27th at 7:00 pm, at Unity of Charlottesville, 2825 Hydraulic Circle.

The Charlottesville Jazz Society and WTJU are thrilled to announce the return of saxophonist Jane Bunnett and her all female band from Cuba, Maqueque. Maqueque will be playing music from its most recent release, On Firm Ground/Tierra Firme. Downbeat Magazine says This band sounds like no other today in jazz, and voted Maqueque one of the top ten groups in jazz in a recent critics poll..

Pianist Danae Olano is Jane's closest collaborator. Her playing and compositions represent the heart and soul of Maqueques music. Dynamic drummer Yissy Garcia is the heartbeat and power that propels Maqueque along, while Mary Paz adds color on a variety of Latin percussion. Sympatico bassist Tailin Marrero completes the rhythm section. Though all musicians contribute vocals, Joanna Majoko, the incredibly soulful vocalist Joanna Majoko, originally from Zimbabwe, is the lead singer.
