The Gina Sobel 4tet at Brooks Hall

Don’t miss the return of Charlottesville’s favorite flutist Gina Sobel on Saturday August 15th at UVA’s Brooks Hall. Gina has been travelling the country since early this year, but she’s coming home briefly to play a special program with her jazz group the 4tet and special guests.

The group will perform the famous piece by pianist and composer Claude Bolling and flutist Jean Pierre Rampal called Suite for Flute and Jazz Piano. This 1970’s era recording was extremely popular with both jazz and classical audiences. Along with Kris Monson on bass and Daniel Richardson on drums, guest pianist Chris Johnston will play Brooks Hall’s beautiful Steinway piano. Gina Sobel has been a mainstay of the Charlottesville music scene for many years. A graduate of William and Mary University, she is highly skilled not only on flute, but also as a guitarist, vocalist, saxophonist and composer. In addition to her jazz group, she leads the highly regarded rock band The Mighty Fine.

Christopher Johnston has served as Music Director of The Northern Virginia Community College Symphony since 1996. A native Virginian, Mr. Johnston is a graduate of Indiana University and earned a Masters in Music in conducting at George Mason University. He has composed music for chorus, string orchestra, and jazz band at the high school, college and professional levels.

Tickets to the 8 pm performance by The Gina Sobel 4tet at Brooks Hall on August 15th are available in advance at flutepianosuite.eventbrite.com. The cost is $12 general admission, $10 for Charlottesville Jazz Society paid supporters, and $5 for students. A limited number of tickets will also be available at the door for $15.
