Highly acclaimed jazz trumpeters Randy Brecker and Art Davis will perform with the CJO. Grammy Award winner Brecker, along with his late brother, Michael, led the Brecker Brothers, a popular fusion band in the 70's and 80's. Randy continues to enjoy a thriving solo career, recording and performing; and is a sought-after player and session musician, performing with many music greats including Stanley Turrentine, Blood Sweat and Tears and Eric Clapton. Art Davis, one of Chicago's leading jazz trumpet artists, is a Professor of Music at Northern Illinois University, and has performed and toured with such legends as Ray Charles, Frank Sinatra and Rosemary Clooney, among others.
The evening performance begins at 7:30 with a set from ETHS's own Jazz Ensemble led by Dr. David Fodor, Director of Bands at the school and the Festival's founding director. It will be held in the school auditorium located at 1600 Dodge Ave. in Evanston. Tickets are $20 for adults, and $15 for children, students (with ID) and seniors. All seats are reserved and can be purchased by calling (847) 424-7878 or order tickets online at ethsjazz.com.
The Evanston Jazz Festival is an all-day event focusing on educating high school and middle school jazz students and showcasing their talents. The festival attracts more than 400 student musicians from school bands around the Midwest. Past festivals have drawn school bands from as far away as Winnipeg, Canada. Last year, over 40 bands and combos from over 20 schools participated in the event.
The daytime Festival events are open to the public at no charge, offering a full day of non-competitive, educational workshops and performances by student musicians. Each band or combo will perform for a team of professional judges and receive feedback and coaching. Other activities include a free noon-time performance by The Mark Colby Quartet, workshops, clinics, and master classes offered by jazz musicians and educators. Festival is sponsored in part by Chicago Jazz Magazine (chicagojazz.com).
