Ulery’s new music for nonet, composed and orchestrated uniquely for the all-improvising band members, celebrates both the dance heritage as well as the more impressionistic styles that have been advancing with the music. The nonet (9-piece jazz orchestra) gained popularity with the the Miles Davis and Gil Evans collaboration. Musicians such a Lee Konitz, Andrew Hill, and Joe Lovano would later create inspired albums with a similar instrumentation.
